I have lived in southern California most of my life and love it. New Years Eve found us warm and dry. The last few weeks have had daytime highs in the upper 80’s and not a cloud in site. But wait, no clouds equals no rain. No rain equals no WATER! So we’re praying for rain now and snow in the Sierra Nevadas where our drinking water comes from.
Now some good news from the sunshine. We have an abundance of Vitamin D producing sunshine. New research has found that vitamin D can help protect and fight infection in the gums that cause gingivitis and periodontitis. And, it was dicovered that vitamin D can stimulate lung cells to kill more bacteria.
So come on America, get your vitamin D, and get healthier

Dry mouth affects about 40% of all Americans and dry mouth can lead to a number of oral health issues. Rampant cavities, difficulty swallowing, and infection due to the thinning of the lining of the mouth are just a few of the problems that can arise from dry mouth.
Dry mouth occurs when the salivary glands aren’t producing enough saliva to keep the mouth lubricated. Medications and disease are the usual causeative factors that keep the production of saliva depressed. There are prescription medications that can aid in producing more saliva, but as with any medication, there may be adverse side affects.
Help may be on the way, researchers at the Georgia Health Sciences University, have been studing the affects of green tea polyphenols and it’s help in correcting the salivary gland’s abnormal behavior.
Look for the green tea lozenges to become available by the end of the year.

According to a recent issue of the Harvard Heart Letter, there is still measurable harm to the body and heart found
among “light” or “intermittent” smokers as there is with their “heavy” habit counterparts.
Nearly half of those individuals who smoke a few cigarettes a day or now and then don’t consider themselves as smokers, say they can quit anytime, and don’t believe smoking poses much risk to their health. Studies state otherwise. Among the hazards with those “light” or “intermittent” smokers include increased risks for:
Heart disease due to high blood pressure and cholesterol-clogged arteries;
Premature death from cardiovascular disease;
Lung, esophageal, stomach, and pancreatic cancer;
Respiratory tract infections;
Delayed conception in women and poor sperm function in men; and
Slower recovery from injury.
There are no formal guidelines to help light and intermittent smokers quit, according to the Harvard Heart Letter, and nicotine replacement may work for
these types of smokers.

A subcommittee of the Human Health Service’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives voted recently to recommend oral health as one of 14 “leading health indicators” (LHIs) for the full-scale implementation of Healthy People 2020.
This is extremely important because the LHIs are used as guidelines for the government when it considers how public, private, and nonprofit health resources should be prioritized over the coming decade, according to a press release.
The subcommittee made its recommendation one day after receiving a letter from the ADA urging that oral health be included as an LHI.
This development indicates a positive advance for oral health issues. However, HHS still has to act on the committee’s recommendation

In the United States, cigarette smoking is on the downswing. But before we start rounds of high-fives, use of other forms
of tobacco, especially among young college-age students, including athletes, is on the uptick. And hookah is part of that scene.
Many hookah users may believe their mode of smoking is less harmful than cigarettes. K. Vendrell Rankin, DDS,
professor and associate chair in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Baylor College of Dentistry, disagrees
and documented her findings in a recent issue of the Texas Dental Journal.
“The results of a systematic review
of the available evidence on hookah smoking found a significantly increased risk for lung cancer, respiratory illness,
low birth-weight, and periodontal disease.”
Additionally, secondhand smoke from a single hookah session
contains approximately four times the carcinogenic polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons, four times the volatile aldehydes, and
30 times the carbon monoxide of a cigarette. Furthermore, some
experts, including the World Health Organization, warn that
communal hookah smoking presents a risk for the transmission of
communicable disease.

Children
For years, the American Academy of Pediatrics advised Fontana parents to begin children’s dentist visits
before the third birthday. The AAP now advises Fontana parents to take their toddler to a California dentist
before their first birthday, or about six months after their first tooth appears.
Why? Prevention, prevention, prevention!
Sadly, Fontana dentists find advanced tooth decay in very young children. High-risk children should be
seen as early as possible.
Following are some of the risk factors:
Sleeping with a bottle
Drinking juice continually during the day
Abnormal tooth development
Thumb sucking
Tooth grinding
A mother with significant tooth decay
Other health problems
To talk to us about pediatric dentistry, call 909.614.4907. Doctor Neal Vavra of Palm Court Dental can
advise you on your next steps for your pediatric dentistry. We also pamper busy Fontana parents who come
to Palm Court Dental for general and cosmetic dentistry.
If you are between the ages of 25 and 85, we would love to provide you with the most advanced dental care
in Fontana.

Both young and old require dental care from time to time. Younger people who have lost teeth to decay or accident and older people who have lost teeth too the same or just the aging process requires restorations to stay healthy. Others are just not happy with their teeth or the aesthetic look they inherited from there ancestors. Whatever the reason there are wonderful choices available today, and priced for just about any budget, while delivering best value and desired results. So, if you need dental assistance to stay healthy or just tired of looking at crooked, unsightly spacing, missing, or chipped teeth, then read on and educate yourself and pick a solution that works for your treatment plan. Dental laboratories like Iverson Dental Laboratories of Riverside, California and Palm Court Dental of Fontana, California are great places to find more information about the following: For those people who desire not to have metal under-structures on their crowns and bridges, the all-ceramic restorations are available and a great choice. These restorations are designed using state-of-art CAD/CAM technology and can be place in the anterior or posterior area of your mouth. All-ceramics will transmit the color of adjacent teeth and tooth structure, blending well, and providing an attractive looking smile. In addition, the all-ceramic product like the IPS e.max and Zirconia boasts a fractural toughness between 360-400 mega pixel strength. Porcelain Fused to Metal, perhaps the most traditional dental option has many benefits; precise fit, reliable strength, biocompatibility with tissue, marginal integrity, natural anatomy, and color, texture, shape and contour.
Many dentists prefer Full-Cast Restorations (gold), and recommend to patients who desire long-term
durability for posterior crowns. You have several choices if you choose this product, white high noble,
noble cast 40%, and yellow high noble 60-77%. These products are biocompatible and adapt to
surrounding tissue. Implants are popular options for people with missing teeth or teeth that need to be removed. Implant technology has come along way in the past few years. Zirconia Crowns attached to implant abutments and Titanium insert resemble existing teeth, thus providing a natural looking tooth while adapting to soft tissue and ensures gingival health and quality bone.
Removable crown & bridge combinations or dentures and partials can be attached to implants, holding them
securely and making it hard to tell the difference from natural teeth and provide overwhelming relief to
those who have struggled with ill fitting dentures.
These are just a few of the choices available to you if you require dental assistance. Dentist like Dr. Neil Vavra, of Fontana, CA can help you choose the products that work best for you. In addition, Palm Court Dental has a great program if you are looking to get whiter teeth.
